Real Girl: Laura
Age: 16 Grade: 10 Sign: Capricorn
Faves: My favourite colours are lime green and hot pink. I love pop music, Gossip Girl, Christmas and drawing. My favorite place is Italy.
Hobbies: I love listening to music, playing on my iPod touch, texting and reading.
School and Stuff: My favourite subject is Art and I am presently the ‘Grade Ten Student Council Representative’. I've won many awards such as the Honour Roll in grade 8, the grade 8 Art Award, several 1st places in different Art competitions, and 1st place in Speech competitions at YCDSB. I love school because I have fun with my friends but I hate getting so much homework!
Personality: My family and friends would say that I am shy, fun, friendly and very talkative.
Life Challenges: I was born with Congenital Heart Disease which led to two open heart surgeries. I am also severely hard of hearing and I wear a Cochlear Implant to help me hear better. Large group settings can be very difficult because it is hard to communicate and listen to a conversation without asking people to repeat themselves. I need a higher level of concentration in class because I have to pay attention and focus more than my classmates. I am very grateful for my high school because they have a hearing centre which gives me all the help and support I need to be successful in school. The message that I would give to other girls in a similar situation as me is to be yourself and don't let anyone control you, tell you what to do or let you down because God created you to be YOU! Have fun, enjoy your life and be happy.
Proud of: I am proud of my academic success and I have improved my grades greatly over the years. I am also very proud of my parents and my siblings because they are my role models and I love them very much.
So Laura: Sleeping in, texting/MSNing/Facebooking my friends, being lazy, never waking up early, obsessing over Zac Efron, wearing sweatshirts and sweatpants, being comfy, over-studying for quizzes and tests, doing my projects two weeks before the due date and freaking out over a math question are soooooo ME!.
Cool facts about Laura: My Cochlear Implant is a magnet that was implanted in my head when I was 7 years old to help me hear. It is an electronic device that provides a sense of sound to a person who is profoundly deaf or severely hard of hearing.
I am a very good artist and some of my artwork has been framed and hung in my house everywhere. My nationality is Italian, Go Italy!! It's no surprise that pizza and pasta are my favourite foods! LOL! My family and I love taking little trips to places such as Muskoka, Blue Mountain and the USA. I've been to Rome, Venice, Milan and Calabria. Also, I've been to Nova Scotia and Myrtle Beach.
Future: Right now, I am just hoping to graduate from high school and go to University. I would also like to get married one day and have kids. :)
Pet Peeves: My pet peeves are being the last person to go to class, cramming for tests and doing chores.

Congratulations Laura!

16-year-old Laura is a spunky kid who loves anything Hollywood! This may sound like a lot of teenagers you know, but there’s one thing that makes Laura a little bit different – she’s living with Congenital Heart Disease. This medical condition is a type of defect in one or more structures of the heart or blood vessels.
To give Laura a well-deserved break from being sick, Make-A-Wish® Canada and some awesome volunteers are currently working with her family to plan her most cherished wish, which is scheduled to take place this year in 2011.
We can’t wait to see Laura’s smile when her wish comes true . . . until then it’s so nice to see her beautiful smile on the cover of Girls Can Do Anything Online Magazine!
