FASHION: Spring into Style

FASHION, April 2010, by Nadia Baboo

Spring into
STYLE!

Fashion - spring styleThere’s something for everyone this Spring – from feminine to bohemian, preppy to funky. Blend one of these styles with something from your own closet & make it your own!

Leggings
Leggings spring over from fall fashion – only for this season they’re lighter & slightly shorter. The most complimentary length for any body type & height is just below the knee. Bright colours & patterns are a good choice for those who are on the petite or slim side. If you’re curvier on your bottom half, keep the colours neutral to avoid drawing attention to your hips. Lace detailing at the hem adds a feminine touch.  Throw them on under your favourite dress, denim skirt or tunic top.

Bubble or Trapeze Dresses
Cool, comfortable & funky! These are a great shape for those who have more of a boyish figure to give the illusion of more feminine curves. They also help balance broader shoulders or fuller bust lines by adding volume on the hips.

Wide-Leg Jeans
These are great for you curvy girls as it allows for more room on the hips & thighs and elongates the leg. Taller, slimmer body types look great in them too! If you’re a little on the petite side, be cautious – too wide a leg can make you look shorter – go for a bootleg cut instead. A refreshing change from the skinny look with a touch of retro flava!

Nautical
Always, fresh, clean  & cool! Traditional blue & white horizontal-striped tops are a classic, but they do add width, so those with a fuller bust line or broader shoulders may want to avoid them. Crisp, white shorts or jeans will lighten your style & brighten your outlook. Now, some of you may be thinking, “Won’t white pants make my butt look big?!” The answer, “Not necessarily.” Any colour can be flattering if it fits properly. Make sure it fits the widest part of your hips & creates a long line down the leg.

Drop-Waist Dresses
Easy-flowing style with a touch of bohemian flare! Great as a cover-up over a swimsuit or for covering up a little bit of a tummy! If you’ve got a shorter torso and longer legs, then this style will help to balance your proportions.

Prints
Florals, geometrics, paisleys, plaids, etc. Choose ones that best suit your personality and follow this simple rule of thumb – the size of the print should be in proportion to the size of the girl.  So, petite ladies, go for smaller prints; average sizes choose medium prints and fuller-figures, try larger prints.

One Shoulder Tops
Want to add even more retro flava? Try this funky, yet feminine fashion. It’s flattering for most bust lines – the open neck & asymmetric line compliments fuller busts (just be sure to wear a supportive strapless bra). Styles with a bit of pleating or ruching can add fullness to smaller busts.

Add some spring to your style – try something new, unexpected – after all it is a time for transformation!
