Does makeup cause acne?
Hair static
Dear Angela,
I went camping and me and this girl had the same mascara and I think we accidentally took the wrong ones. Now my eyes are getting red and itchy. I’m scared to tell but I’m worried about it getting worse, what should I do?
~ Sam, 15, Bracebridge ON
Hey Girl...
If your eyes appear to be red and feel itchy STOP using that mascara and seek medical attention RIGHT AWAY!! Sharing any type of makeup is not a good idea as many infections can be easily passed along from one person to the next. Your eyes could simply be irritated from camping and being outdoors, but have your doctor check them out to be on the safe side. Also, talk to your friend and ask if she has any of the same symptoms you do. JUST REMEMBER: Good makeup hygiene means no sharing! Always check the expiry dates and toss the old stuff. Your safest bet is to stick to using your own mascara tube and replacing it every three months so that your eyes are in the clear!

Dear Stephanie,
If I have acne, is it true that makeup will make it worse? I want to cover it up but I don’t want to make it worse!
~ D, 14, Cape Breton, NS
Hey D!
No, wearing makeup won’t make it worse as long as you are using the right products and applying them properly. For example, use oil-free products and always clean your face before applying. The key is to wash your face in the morning and at night and scrub gently. The reason some people think that make-up causes pimples is because it sometimes clogs the pores. Thing is, you already have the break outs, so it’s not the make-up that is causing it to begin with. There are lots of reason why you have acne... poor diet? stress? not washing? Be sure to drink lots of water and try to stay away from greasy and sugary foods. I suggest you use an oil-free cream concealer and light powder. You don’t need to cover your face in foundation, start light and go from there.
Makeup won’t make it worse as long as you ALWAYS remove it before bed and you ALWAYS maintain a daily cleaning and moisturizing routine!!!
~ Stephanie
Dear Melissa,
My question is about static. How come I get it and how do I make it stop? None of my friends have it.
~ Electric-hair, 13, Jasper, AB
Dear Electric,
Let’s de-electrify your locks! Essentially, static is caused by dryness. It tends to get worse in the colder weather when the dry air dehydrates your hair, causing static. Moisturizing is the best defense! Start by conditioning your hair regularly. Apply a leave-in conditioner to towel dried hair and style as desired. This will help alleviate frizz and seal moisture inside your hair. Another tip to help calm those electric locks is to spray your hair bush or comb with an anti-static spray before running it through your hair. Try using a natural bristle brush instead of a nylon brush. Need a quick fix? Rub hand lotion on your hands until nearly dry, then run your fingers over your hair. Traces of the lotion will transfer to the hair, keeping it from flying away. You can also use a fabric softener sheet to run over your hair if it gets out of control!
