Challenge:
Beauty

I picked a Beauty Challenge because me and my friends wear a lot of makeup, and labels and I thought it would be cool to see how long we can go without wearing them.

What makes you a Real Girl: What makes me a real girl is that I don’t have to wear makeup or fancy clothes to be me. I act like me and you either like me or you don’t. I’m just me.

Faves: acting, singing and dancing.

Pet Peeve:
When people chew with their mouths open.

Fave saying/quote: "Never let the fear of striking out keep you from playing the game." - Scott Chester and "It’s okay to face your fears, even if you need your blankie right beside you." - Kim Gadbois

Challenge Summary:
As I look back on September and see the changes in me and my friends' lives I can't help but see that we were very materialistic. None of us ever left the house without makeup on, and now we have gone without makeup, and have reduced our use of it by a significant amount. Personally from this experience I saw the material strength and weaknesses in all of us. For example I'm fine without going without makeup, for a little while at least but it is hard for be to stay away from labels. We all had our strengths and weaknesses with this challenge but the majority of us had the most trouble with no makeup. Since we were on a sailing trip for a week we went without makeup then, but when we came back, we started applying it again. Labels were hard in the way that most of us have no clothing that is not Garage, Hollister, Abercrombie, Aritzia, or Aeropostle. Since each of these labels are on most of our clothes, it was hard to stay away from them. Nina had the most strength with labels because most of her clothing does not have labels, or she layers so much you cannot tell where her clothes are from. the results from going without hairstyles were the most surprising. We all thought Erin and I would have the least amount of difficulty because we rarely straighten our hair, but we had as much trouble as everyone else because we found ourselves putting our hair up most days. But by our last month, not saying negative things about ourselves or others, we broke through the materialistic barrier! None of us said negative things about anyone's appearance, or our own! We were all very proud of ourselves and the fact we had ended this challenge with a bang. Since then we've all worn less makeup, bought less labels, sometimes just let our hair air dry without straightening it, and we haven't said negative things about anyone of ourselves. We are glad we got to participate in this challenge because it opened our eyes about how we can be less materialistic. Our message is to try this challenge with your friends, give each other positive comments and help each other to be less materialistic. Even if you cheat once and a while, you have to keep going and trying because its worth it, you're beautiful without all these things and you need to believe that.
Challenge:
Pay It Forward

I chose to do a Pay it Forward RAK challenge because I knew it would make an impact on my family for being nicer to each other. At school I knew they would go along with my idea because they want to make this school a happier place.

What makes you a Real Girl?: I’m real because I’m kind to people, I accept people just the way they are. I think that people are beautiful not because of their face or their clothes. It’s the heart that counts.

Faves: My mom’s homemade stir-fry, blue, purple, lime green, babysitting, biking, crafts and cooking.

Pet Peeve: When people don’t turn off the lights when they should. GO GREEN! :)

Fave saying/quote: ‘be real. be you.TM

Challenge Summary:

School RAKs: Total: 61 Home RAKs: Total: 1732
At home I found that the RAKs made my family more of a whole and made our family nicer, more loving people. My feelings about this was fun and awesome!!!!!
At school we got 61 RAKs and I thought that this was impressive. The challenge has prevented a lot of things like bullying and rudeness. This has changed has my school as a whole and since this has been such a success we are continuing it until the end of the year! I love the CCLC!

Challenge:
Pay It Forward

I chose to do a Pay it Forward challenge at my school because I think it’s important to do nice things for each other, and that would mean a happier school. Little things we do for each other can make someone’s day a little brighter.

What makes you a Real Girl?:
I’m real because I have a different perspective than most girls and I like to hangout with different kinds of people. My closest friends are all very different but get along great!

Faves: My website, the books Harry Potter, The Ashley’s and The Sisterhood series, and school -- It may sound weird but when I’m at school, I’m guaranteed to see my friends.

Pet Peeve:
When people don’t listen in class and expect me to explain it all over again.

Fave saying/quote: How well you succeed is measured by how badly you want it.

Challenge summary:
The challenge went pretty well. In the end we had about 400 RAK's (random acts of kindness) in the school. I think that it showed that a lot of kindness goes on in the school and some things people had written down surprised me because I didn't know the kids in my school did those things for each other. My favourite part of the whole challenge was reading the 3 chosen RAK's in the newsletter every month. I think that is the part that had the biggest impact because you actually get to read about what others are doing to help around the school. My advice to future CCLC girls is to choose this challenge and try it out with their family, friends or school. It's a lot of work, but I think it's worth it!

Challenge:
Community

I chose to do a Girls Club for my challenge.

What makes you a Real Girl: I’m a real girls because I am made different and unique, just the way I’m meant to be! I don’t need anyone else’s opinion or approval to be happy with being me. I like me, just the way I am.

Faves: Lime green, cats, soccer, math, and listening to music.

Pet Peeve:
Showing off or bragging.

Fave saying/quote:
  "Never give up!"

Challenge Summary:
The challenge was a blast! We helped out the animal rescue center, had fun, learned about ourselves (we really do enjoy just being ourselves, and not accepting the pressure of the media and society). It's amazing how us girls can really make a difference if we just try. You just have to believe in yourself, and never give up!

Challenge:
Pay It Forward

I chose the Pay it Forward challenge because I wanted to see how many other people could be kind to each other. I also thought it would be funny if someone gave a token back to me not knowing that I was the one that started it!

What makes you a Real Girl?: I try my best. I can be girly and I can be sporty too; like when I go camping. I don’t wear makeup and I just be me.

Faves: My fave colour is baby blue and my fave hobbies are knitting and camping.

Pet Peeve: Bullies, and people making noises when I am reading!

Challenge Summary:

I like the challenge I choose because it made me feel good that I was helping people. It also made me feel good when people I did not know read my article and decided that they would do a RAK (random act of kindness) because I inspired them. My friends thought it was cool that I was working for GCDA asking poll questions and giving out RAK tokens because they got to be in the magazine and told their parents that they were in a magazine. My BFFs liked reading and/or discussing the latest issue of GCDA with me. Almost everyone participated even my teacher passed her token forwarded.

I learnt that what goes around comes around and that it really is real because when me and my friends were nice to someone, that someone was nice back to us. I also learnt that when you help someone you feel good about yourself.

Challenge:
Beauty

I choose the Beauty Challenge because I think that the media has gone totally CRAZY with dieting and weight loss campaigns.

What makes you a Real Girl?:
I am a real girl because I am outgoing and don’t care what my friends say about what I look like or do.

Faves: The book ‘The Last Unicorn’, the colours green and gold, and the group ABBA!

Pet Peeve:
Having my father as my grade 9 math teacher!

Fave saying/quote: "I have not failed, I have just found 1001 ways that do not work." Thomas Edison.

Challenge summary:
For the challenge that I chose (Beauty) I did learn a lot! I learned that girls especially tweens and teens, are way too occupied with their appearance. Young women do not need to be starving themselves to think that they will attain an unrealistic image. Models are airbrushed and poked and digitally shrunk and emphasized to a point where they are barely human anymore. Not very long ago Marilyn Monroe was the woman men fell head over heals for, the women that was envied by everyone. She was a size 16. Not the type of girl that you see walking the runways in Paris and Milan. I am also not that size. I have sought out better role models for myself. Also I have started to care less about what the popular kids think about my size and shape. My friends and I have really taken this challenge to heart, and we could care less what some 90 pound stick says about us. I really want to say to the new crop of CCLC girls, be you. No one in the entire world is the exact same as you. No matter size or shape, weight or height, you are an amazing person and you shouldn’t allow anyone to make you feel small or insignificant. As GCDA says “be real. be you.TM

Challenge:
Community

I love volunteering and I’ve been a member of the Girl Guide family since I was five. I started a Girl’s Club with Marissa at our old elementary school because I believe that for them, talking to girls just old enough to have the experience of hind-sight can make a real difference!

What makes you a Real Girl: I value intelligence and what’s on the inside. I love to shop as much as the next person, but I also know what’s important in life. I believe girls can do anything if they truly believe in- and push themselves to their limit, and always reach for the stars.

Faves: Reading, shopping, volunteering.

Pet Peeve:
Getting up early.

Fave Saying:
"If I get 100% on all the tests for the rest of the year..."
Challenge:
Community

I chose to do a Girl’s Club with Chantelle for my Random Acts of Kindness Challenge because I really like hanging out and helping girls. This challenge was a lot of fun, and knowing I may have helped even one of the girls in any way really gives me a great feeling!

What makes you a Real Girl?:
I am a real girl because I stand up for what I believe in, no matter how popular (or not) the idea is to anyone else.

Faves: Chocolate, shoes, handbags.

Pet Peeve:
Socks and sandals.

Fave saying/quote: "History will be kind to me, for I intend to write it." ~ Sir Winston Churchill.

Challenge:
ECO

I chose the Eco challenge because global warming in our world is so severe and it is time we do something to change it. We, the youth as a collective are the people that can solve the climate crisis. After all, we are tomorrow’s leaders!

What makes you a Real Girl?:
I am crazy, undefined and diversified. One minute I am hiking and the next I am dressing up with my friends, putting on make-up and dancing to "Barbie girl". I am me and that is that. I don’t try to hide my own identity.

Faves: The colour blue, listening and making music of any kind (I play trumpet, piano, guitar and I sing), hanging out with my friends, reading and writing!

Pet Peeve:
Ticking of analog clocks!

Fave saying/quote: "Dream as if you will live forever, live as if you will die today." - James Dean
