When was she alive?
Born in Atchison, Kansas, July 24, 1897 – 1937

What was she famous for?
Amelia Earhart was the first woman to fly solo over the Atlantic Ocean, as well as breaking many other records. When Amelia was 38 years old, she challenged herself to fly around the world!

What did she do?
On June 1, 1937, the silver plane, Electra, took off in Miami at sunrise. Their first stop was in Carpieto, Venezuela. As they flew around the equator, everything seemed to be fine, but the worst was yet to come.

On July 2, the Electra left New Guinea to go to an island that was so small, it was difficult to locate. The ground crew tried to reach her with every frequency call they had, but they still could not reach her after her last call five hours previously. Then there was nothing, and they received no more calls from Amelia.

Interesting Fact
They never found her plane, Amelia, or her co-pilot, Fred Noonan. More than a half-century after Amelia Earhart’s final flight, people are still trying to explain the mystery of her disappearance in 1937.

Why is she a Role Model for girls and women today?
Amelia is remembered as someone who was brave and courageous. She is a role model to many because she made a path for women in aviation and other fields that had not been open to women. Amelia Earhart displayed some very important values, many of which we see in exceptional role models today. Among these were loyalty, sincerity, moral character, honesty, and ethics. She was always about helping the underdog. She was also persistent and never gave up on a goal.

I love that Amelia Earhart is a role model even for people today, because girls still fight for sexual equality, and she was someone who made a positive impact on it. As a role model, Amelia Earhart is definitely Crew Approved!

Hi ke'chyara, to answer your question, an "underdog" is someone who is at a disadvantage, someone who struggles or is unlikely to succeed. In Amelia's case, she helped people believe in themselves when they thought they couldn't accomplish something. :)
