Marla Real Girl


Age: 15  Grade: 10th  Sign: Scorpio

Favourites: I love twirling baton, singing, dancing around, chocolate chip cookies, the shows: Ugly Betty and America’s Next Top Model, rock music, science class, volley ball, and chatting with my friends on my computer. 

Hobbies: I do competitive baton, I am on my school volleyball team, I take singing lessons and have completed my vocal exams. I LOVE being on stage and listening to music.

School & Stuff: English comes naturally to me and I like both reading and writing. Science is one of my best classes in school because I am interested in learning how things work, like DNA. I spend my school volunteer hours coaching recreational classes of baton. It is different than I expected, however it’s fun showing the kids new skills.

Personality: I would describe myself as a perfectionist. I am always striving to be the best I can be, as well as trying to constantly improve myself. I am definitely a goal oriented person. My friends would say that I am friendly, funny and very organized.

Life Challenge: I’ve struggled with scoliosis for about 5 years, which took a toll on my baton twirling, as well as many other activities I love to do. It’s getting better now, and I am able to continue to do what I love.

Proud of: I’m proud of winning the Grade 8 Science Award. I was also thrilled to make the volleyball team in my first year of high school. For the past 9 years I have been twirling baton, 6 of those competitively. In 2006 I was the Provincial Freestyle Champion. I am proud of that because I practice at least two nights a week and have competitions on the weekends throughout the spring and summer months. 

SO Marla: Twirling baton, singing, sleeping in until 1pm on weekends, funky hairstyles, reading magazines, and laughing a lot is so me. I have a broad range of interests. I encourage everyone to find time to do something they LOVE so life’s demands won’t seem so overwhelming!

Cool Fact about Marla: I like being original and funky. I researched how to do a raccoon tail in my hair and I did it – it is really cool and I LOVE it!  I’m one of those people who actually use my school agenda – I love being organized and I don’t mind juggling things when I am.

Future: I have not completely decided what I want to do in the future, however I would love to pursue my passion for singing. I could also see myself working in the medical industry doing some kind of research work.

Pet Peeves: Whistling and people chewing wildy!
