FASHION TIPS: Tummies

Tummies can be flat as a board or soft and round – six packs or baby fat. Love yours for what it is and try not to focus on changing it. Every belly is beautiful so enhance your natural beauty with all the right styles!

TIP #1 Choose the correct ‘rise’!

Got muffin top? It’s probably because your bottoms are too tight or the ‘rise’ isn’t right for you. The rise is the distance between the top of your pants and the bottom of the crotch area of your pants. The top of your pants or skirts should sit just below your belly button. Anything higher will give you a ‘Buddha Belly’ and anything lower will reveal too much in the back when you sit or crouch down. Butt cleavage is so NOT COOL!

TIP #2 Concentrate on Fit!
Avoid anything too baggy - it won’t give you any shape and will make you look boyish. Also, avoid tops that are too tight or clingy. This look is never flattering – it makes thinner frames thinner and if you’re uncomfortable with your tummy, it won’t hold it in – it will make it stand out.

TIP #3 Plan your pattern and colour!
Always remember: Bright or light colours and large or bold patterns draw attention to an area. This doesn’t mean to stay away from colours or patterns, just wear them strategically. If you want to camoflauge your tummy and you love to wear a great plaid skirt, choose a slightly softer colour combination of checks. Or if you must wear your black & red, make sure the length comes down to your knee. Shorter skirts actually emphasize the tummy area. Enjoy the rich, vibrant colours of Fall – purples, fuschias, deep aquas and ruby reds. Use them to play up the areas you do want to emphasize. Just like cool patterned leggings or embellished tops - they will bring the attention where you always want it – your beautiful face!

TIP #4 Choose the right styles!
Watch out for boxy styles! Try tops that are shaped with details at the waist to flatter your figure - like seaming, darting or ruching. Belts, sashes and tops with solid coloured waistbands are also very flattering. Wrap-tops and empire waists that don’t poof out too much are great for everyone. Long clingy-knit sweaters are very popular this fall, but are not the most forgiving style. If you’ve got a bit of a ‘pooch’, this look will emphasize it. But if you absolutely must have one, try pairing it with a wide belt slung just below the waist. Another great idea is to wear a fitted jacket over that tight sweater – an embellished denim one would look really cute!

TIP #5 LOVE YOUR TUMMY!
You know what girls? We can try to hide stuff and tuck stuff, but in the end when we just accept and love what we’ve got we will be the most beautiful we can be!
