Real Girl: Vanessa

Age: 14 Grade: 8 Sign: Aries

Favourites: I love shopping. My favourite foods are McDonald's, spaghetti and meatballs, Spanish foods like tortillas, rice, and beans, and cheese cake. My favourite colours are pink and baby blue. I love listening to music, wa tching American Idol, the Family channel and Disney movies. My favourite times of the year are summer and Christmas.

School and Stuff: My favourite subject is music.  I join everything I can right now in music. I also love sports. I just finished basketball, and I was on the volleyball team. I love sports so I just go for it! I have been on the honour role in the past. My school has a thing called the Cares Award that I won once for ‘responsibility’. I don’t really like History and Geography, but I like the friend aspect of going to school. Right now I’m excited and nervous to start high school next year!

Hobbies: I like to hang out with my friends, listen to music, sing, talk on the phone or chat on the computer with my friends, and learn to play new instruments (I play flute, just learned the clarinet and keyboard and I might try the trumpet next!).

Personality: My friends would say I’m crazy, trustworthy, outgoing and very talkative. I would add that I’m a nice person, I love meeting new people, I’m supportive and responsible.

Life Challenge: I would say peer pressure has been my challenge. It’s hard to be someone different when you see people trying so hard to be the same as other girls or guys. I have to stay true to myself but it’s hard. When the media says stuff to stereotype people, it’s hard to live up to. Sometimes I feel pressure about how I act or dress, but I try to be true to myself because I want people to notice me for me, not for trying to be something else. In the past I may have given in for a little while, but I always go back and realize when I’m doing things just because other people are. It’s so hard to not get into peer pressure… you have to try really hard and stay true to yourself. I think it will be harder in high school! Right now my school is small so with more people in high school I think it will be a lot harder to avoid the peer pressure.

Proud of: I’m proud of being on a demo gymnastics team, that I’m doing good in school and that I’m doing extra curricular things. I’m also proud that this year I’m trying out for everything! It’s my last year in grade school and I want to make it the best. I’m proud that I’m a Christian; my faith is important to me, and I’m proud of my background. My mom is Spanish and my dad is Indian. I know how to speak Spanish and I’ve been to Costa Rica. I have two older brothers who are 16 and 21.

So Vanessa: Always eating, listening to music, wearing lip gloss, skinny jeans, late in the morning but on time for everything else, and being on the computer is SOOO ME!

Cool Fact about Vanessa: When I went to Costa Rica with my mom we stayed with her best friend and I became really close with one of her daughters, Karla. We still stay in touch by writing, instant messaging and talking on the phone.

Future: I want to perform more, get into singing, stay in gymnastics, learn other instruments, go to University, try new things and in the nearest future START GRADE 9!!!

Pet Peeves: When people slurp, when people try to be like other people, and when there’s no food in the fridge.
