The Civil War in Sierra Leone took place from 1991-2002 and during that time life could be very rough. The Rebels were known to attack unexpectedly and the results were often fatal. Sadly, one day as Mariatu was going into town to get food, she was encountered by a group of rebels who cut off her hands. Hi! I live in Ontario, Canada. I loved reading this book. I'm in a club at my school called "The Red Maple Club" and we are supposed to read interesting books like these which are marked with a red Maple Leaf (Canada sign). This is a awesome book. I've encouraged all of my friends to read it (I am an avid fan of reading) and even though they haven't finished a novel in a while, they absolutely loved the fact that I introduced such a heart-warming story to them. I encourage reading this book, as it teaches you something very important in life. Something different, and unique.
