Inspirational Girls - More Than Just a Hobby

INSPIRATIONAL GIRLS AND WOMEN, December 2007, by Jenifer Merifield

More Than
Just a Hobby
Meet Jenny

This is Jennie. She’s a typical 13 year old girl from Ontario. She loves soccer, history books by Eric Walters, pop and country music, the colour blue, french fries, summertime at the cottage, and her dog Trooper.

Although she sounds like a regular teenager, there is something very unique about her. She has taken a favourite hobby to a level some of you wouldn’t think of until you got older.

Jennie's Hobby

Her hobby is photography. What she does above and beyond taking pictures: she sells them, all by herself. That’s right, Jennie is not only a talented artist, but she is also an entrepreneur.

Jennie's Photos
On her 12th Christmas she received a digital camera from her uncle and soon realized how much she loved taking photos.

A follow up gift from Uncle John was a printer... one of those cool photo printers that prints full size!

After printing out a few of her scenery shots her Mom joked, “those are so great you should sell them.”

And so the idea was sparked.
Soon after, Jennie packed up her photos, a fold out table, a sign that read “Photos for Sale”, her puppy Trooper and she went down to the lake to set up shop.

Trooper sat in a baby stroller for company while Jennie showed her beautiful photos to passers-by.

“She has an eye for design” her Mom says, “and the guts to do what feels right for her.” A mixture that has helped her sell almost 50 PHOTOS for $10 each to date!

Jennie’s favourite subjects are of scenery “preferably where there is forest and water in the landscape”. She also likes to take pictures of cottages, signs and gates and would like to try flowers as well.

Jennie's Future
In the future she thinks she may try fashion photography on site where natural scenery is the background.

That’s not all, she is also working on a calendar right now with different photos for each month.

When asked what her message to other teens would be she said, “If you like it, try it. Who cares if you’re afraid of getting made fun of, it doesn’t matter. Just take the chance!”

We are proud to support Jennie, her hard work and her perseverance. We encourage you to as well. If you would like to support Jennie, a fellow Canadian and talented photographer by buying one of her photos, please write to the Editor and we’ll get her and her Mom in contact with you!

Her beautiful photos are only $10 and come framed. Shipping is extra, of course.
