FASHION TIPS: Bustlines

Our breasts are a significant part of what makes us female. Small, medium or large; flat, pointy or round - no matter what shape and size, they are a part of who we are! Learn to love and accept what you have and use these simple tips to flatter them in all your fashions.

TIP #1 Wear a proper fitting bra!
Did you know that the average female wears 6 different bra sizes throughout her lifetime? And 80% of them are wearing the wrong size? Ask your Mom to take you for a professional bra-fitting, or go with your friends. They usually offer them for free at most lingerie boutiques and although you can do it yourself, I don’t recommend it. A good bra can make or break an outfit, so trust the professionals to get the best fit possible. Besides, a day of shopping is always fun!

Be sure to choose a bra specialist with experience and one with whom you feel comfortable. An experienced professional should ask you lots of questions about how you feel. Be honest with them and take your time. Try on several bras, not just one or two. Don’t feel pressured into buying anything, just because it’s ‘cute’ or ‘pretty’.

TIP #2 Choose a flattering neckline!

As we talked about in our last issue, if you want to minimize a full bust, go with open necklines (V, scoop, boat, sweetheart, etc.).  If it’s too low, add a tank top, cami or tee underneath. Smaller busted girls can choose higher necklines (smaller V’s, crew, cowl necks, turtlenecks, etc.).

TIP #3 Use pattern proportion!
A large or bold print or pattern will emphasize an area. Therefore, fuller busted gals should avoid wearing them on top. Be careful of plaids, patchwork, large florals, large argyle prints, etc. If you love patterns, choose more curved shapes to flatter your curves and vertical stripes to minimize. For a smaller bust, do the opposite of your fuller-figured sisters. Prints will add more shape, especially curved lines which add curves. Tops with horizontal lines will appear to broaden.

TIP #4 Get the right shape and style!
There is one universal rule for all bustlines – no boxy tops! They add bulk to fuller-figures and drown-out smaller ones. Wear styles that are shaped – not overly tight! Shaped! Look for darting, ruching or c-shaped seaming at the sides. Styles like wrap-tops or empire waists are flattering on everyone. They add shape to the bust and waistline.

Fuller figures: avoid bulky or ribbed sweaters which pull and lose their shape. Make sure your tops end at the hip area and aren’t too short. Also, avoid any extra detailing at the bustline which draws attention.
Smaller busts: try ruffles, patch or flap pockets or anything eye-catching over the chest. You can wear thicker cable-knit sweaters, but again, be sure they’re not too boxy. You can also take advantage of spaghetti-straps, halter-styles and strapless numbers. But remember to keep it tasteful. You can look great without over doing it!

TIP #5 Colour is key!
Colour is beautiful on every bust size! It draws attention up to the face. One word of caution for our full-busted gals: Lighter or brighter colours may emphasize this area, so be sure to compliment it with something toned down. For example, if you’re wearing a bright pink t-shirt, try layering it with a neutral coloured hoodie or cardigan.
