DIY: Make your own gift cards
GIRLFRIENDS, May 2008, by Danielle Slade and daughter Madalynn
Make your own
gift cards!
your mini scrapbook project
A lot of readers have written in asking for craft ideas to do with their girlfriends at sleep overs or on the weekends. We asked Danielle Slade, a professional scrapbook artist, to help us come up with some ideas. So she and her daughter Madalynn came up with these cool card ideas. Since it’s so close to Mother’s Day, we thought a card for Mom would be a great project. Of course, you can make your cards for anyone.
BASIC CARD MAKING DIRECTIONS
1. Gather up the following supplies:
- card stock (heavy paper) and some coloured paper
- buttons, beads, or craft gems
- ribbon
- glitter glue
- glue stick
- pens, markers
2. Make the card base by folding the card stock in half to the size you like. It can open horizontal or vertical.
3. Cut out pieces of coloured paper and ribbon in different lengths and without gluing, place them on the front of your card to get ideas.
4. Once you decide what looks right, glue your pieces down.
5. Decorate with glitter glue, beads, sparkles and buttons.
6. Write your personal message inside with a metallic marker.
You can buy neat scrapbook supplies at craft shops and even at dollar stores. Look around for some great ideas!
HOW TO MAKE A SECRET MESSAGE FLAP
Just like the pink card shown to the left. Get a piece of ribbon or cut a piece of paper in a long strip. Glue it running straight up the center back of the card long enough so it will flap over to the front. Cut a piece of paper that your message will go on. Glue it to the front end of your flap. Now glue just the side and bottom edges of a piece of paper the size of the front of your card (like the clear pink part to the left). Now you have a flap that will tuck in!
