Dear Melissa:

I can't afford to highlight my hair, so can I just use laundry bleach?
~ Hydee, 13, Rochester, New York

Dear Hydee,
Please, DO NOT use laundry bleach on your hair! Laundry bleach has a very high concentration of chlorine that can badly damage your hair and scalp. Although you may hear some people refer to lightening their hair as 'bleaching' it, the products used to do this are not the same as regular laundry bleach. Alternatively, drugstore hair dye products are affordable compared to a salon, but it is not always easy controlling the result that these products give either. The best way to naturally lighten your hair is to enjoy some time in the sun, especially as we head into summer! Wear a visor instead of a hat and go have some fun. A few hours a day will give you sun-kissed locks, and it’s free! Another option is to go to your local beauty supply store and purchase clip-in highlights. They come in a variety of lengths and colours. The person at the store can show you how to place them. A few pieces don't cost too much, they are fun to use and they don't damage your hair!

Dear Angela,
How do I cover up the hugest pimple ever? Every time I have somewhere to go like a dance with my friends I get a big zit that makeup won't even stick to. PLEASE help me!

Hi 'Another Angela'!
First let's talk about SKIN! It is extremely important to take care of your skin on a daily basis to keep you looking your best and help prevent future breakouts. Trust me... follow this DAILY SKIN REGIME every morning and night and your skin will thank you!

STEP ONE: cleanse your face with a mild cleanser to wash away any dirt, oil and makeup from your skin.

STEP TWO: use an alcohol-free toner to balance and keep your skin feeling fresh.

STEP THREE: moisturize, moisturize, moisturize!! Choose a moisturizer with an SPF and apply to your face and neck to keep your skin feeling soft and healthy looking.

STEP FOUR: use a gentle facial scrub before toning (once a week) to exfoliate and remove any dead skin cells from the surface of your skin.

Now, when it comes to covering a blemish, there are many different types of camouflage makeup available on the market today (concealer, foundation etc). These products are made to help hide any discolorations, redness and scars on the skin and will even out any skin tone. Both concealer and foundation come in all types of textures, coverage and colours to suit any skin tone.

TRY THIS: Using a small concealer brush or clean finger tips (after you have done the steps above), lightly stipple (dab) a cream concealer over your pimple making sure the shade matches your skin tone perfectly (be careful, too light or too dark can draw more attention to the spot). Next, if it's part of your normal makeup application, apply a thin layer of liquid foundation over your entire face with a makeup sponge or medium foundation brush and always blend it into the neck for a more even finish. If you don't usually wear foundation, you can skip this step. Finally, with a large powder brush, pat translucent powder over the pimple and your entire face to help seal the concealer and set the foundation. This step is very important when you're finding it hard to get the makeup to stick. It may just be because you haven't 'sealed it' properly and by simply applying a powder you will notice your makeup lasting longer and looking flawless.

REMEMBER: starting off with clean, moisturized skin will allow your makeup to last longer and look better. The key to a great looking makeup is healthy skin underneath!
