Stray Hairs | Removing Waterproof Mascara
Where and How to Wear Perfume

Dear Melissa,
I have all these little stray hairs that stick up on my head around the top and I try to make them go down with my flat iron and no matter what I do they float up there!!! What should I do?
~ Jemma, 14, Lake Echo, NS

Great question Jemma!
Yes, the little stray hairs can drive you crazy. What I find works best is to use a tiny amount of a lightweight pomade, shine serum or even hand lotion. Rub the product in your hands until it’s almost gone and then lightly run your hands over the trouble areas.

Remember, less is more! Unfortunately, using your flat iron can make the problem worse. The heat and friction of running the flat iron through your hair can cause more hairs to stand up. Try this: before using your flat iron... spray a thermal protector on your hair. This will help to lock in moisture, protecting your hair from becoming dried out.

Dear Julia,
I bought a new mascara and I can not get it off! I have tried every thing! What should I do?
~ Adara, 11, Sudbury, Ontario

Dear Adara,
There are 2 types of mascaras: waterproof (water resistant) and non water resistant. You didn't mention if it is the waterproof mascara you have trouble with, but it sure sounds like it. To remove waterproof mascara you should use a waterproof eye makeup remover that you can buy from a local drug store. If you just run out of your eye makeup remover and need a quick fix, another great solution is using baby shampoo or olive oil on a cotton pad. Hold the pad on your lashes with closed eyes for about 30 seconds and wipe away. Next, rinse it off with a daily cleanser.

It is not recommended, however, to use waterproof mascara for every day use. Save it for special events and use a regular non water resistant mascara instead. It's very important to never share your mascara with others and buy a new one every 3 months to avoid an eye infection. Remember to always remove mascara at the end of the day and be very gentle so as not to harm your eyes or your lashes.

Dear Angela,
Where are you supposed to put perfume? When I spray it on my neck I get a red blotch, but once I put it on my shirt and it left like a grease stain???
~ Taz, Comox, BC

Great question Taz...
Fragrances can be found in many different beauty products like perfume, soap, makeup, skin care lotion and much more. Some chemicals used when making fragrances can irritate or cause an allergic reaction (like red blotches and itchiness) to sensitive skin types. The most effective way to prevent reactions from a perfume is to FIRST: test out all products you are interested in before purchasing them, or ask for a sample size to take home. THEN: wear the product for a few days while watching for any reactions. Doing this will save you money and help you find the right product that works for your skin type.

Now, applying perfume is normally done by dabbing one or two drops to the pulse points of your wrists and throat. But in your case Taz, since you have had a reaction, TRY THIS: spray into the air about seven inches away from your skin and walk into the scent. This way the product won't directly hit your skin and at the same time won't stain your clothes. REMEMBER don't over-apply and stay away from spraying perfume over and over again thinking it will help the scent stay strong all day. The key to a proper application is: LESS is MORE!
