Real Girl: Julia

Real Girl Julia!Age: 15  Grade: 10  Sign: Leo

Faves: My favorite colors are purple and apple green. My favorite foods are gnocchi and olives. I love the television shows Gossip Girl, CSI and Criminal Minds. I listen to a big variety of music, therefore I have many favorite artists such as Britney Spears, The Cab, Miley Cyrus, Ke$ha, Lady Gaga, Jason Mraz, John Mayer, All Time Low, Never Shout Never, The Spill Canvas, Joan Jett and Madonna, just to name a few. My favorite actress is Julia Roberts, and my favorite actor is Will Smith. I love watching comedy and romance movies, and my favorite movies are Pretty Woman, 13 Going on 30, The Pursuit of Happiness and The Runaways. My favorite season is a tie between fall and spring, because it’s not too hot or too cold. My favorite holidays are Easter and Christmas. My all time favorite novels are the Harry Potter Series, The Mortal Instruments Series and A Little Princess (even if it may be considered a children’s novel)!

Hobbies: I love the dramatic arts. Acting is my passion and something that I’ve been doing since I was eight years old. I love being able to get lost in another character and to leave who I am and become someone else. I love to read and write. Generally people will find me either reading a book or writing. I love to write short stories, scripts and poetry. I’m also a big computer “geek” and can be found chatting with my friends online or even making websites for fun! I love music, singing and dancing. I especially love hanging out with my friends and am always out doing something with them, like watching a movie or volunteering at the library! I’ve recently tried to acquire new hobbies that are more “active” like running and walking my dog.

School and Stuff: School is really important to me and is something I (surprisingly) enjoy. I like learning new things, and actually like school better than summer. I’m in grade 10 this year and I go to an all girl’s school. I really love my school because it’s a place where I can be myself and not be judged.  In grade nine, I decided to attend a high school none of my elementary friends were attending. I wanted to meet new people, and experience something different. While I kept in contact with a lot of my friends, I was happy that I tried something new because now I have a lot of new friends! My favorite subjects in school are Drama, English, French, Science and History. I’m a book worm, so I prefer language classes and don’t enjoy math classes very much. I’m a part of the Drama Club at school and I am the president! I have also joined the Cross Country team. Last year I competed in the Sears Drama Festival with my school and we won two awards!

Personality: People always tell me that I’m really loud and energetic. I’m a really happy person, and am always smiling. I’m really mature which means that I don’t always get along with people my age. One of my best friend calls me her “second conscious” because I am always the sensible person in any situation and someone who will give her advice. I’ve been told I’m modest. I don’t like bragging, and I always feel bad when I do something for myself and not for other people. I’m a really giving and helpful person. I want to shine a light on someone’s day, and help people through their struggles. My teachers and especially my mom tell me I talk way too much! I can’t help it though, I have a lot to say and always speak my mind. Overall, I’m a very open, honest and friendly person who tries to look out for my loved ones and friends.

Life Challenge: Although I am only 15 years old, I’ve gone through a very large life challenge. As a child my brother and I were emotionally abused by our father and his girlfriend. It was really hard to go through life always being made fun of, being put down. No child should feel worthless; no child should cry themselves to sleep at night. It was a really dark and unhappy time. For six years, I felt miserable and worthless. Finally though, when I turned thirteen I decided to speak up about it. It wasn’t easy, I had hidden so much emotion over the course of my childhood, and I had never told anyone. So opening up was a scary thing for me to do. But I believed the pain would go away once I did open up. In many ways it did. I found comfort in knowing other people, teachers, guidance counselors, etc, were listening to me and understanding what I was saying. But, other times, actually a big part of the time, it felt as though no one understood. It’s hard for me, even today to talk about it. To be reminded of something I worked so hard to hide. Today, I am no longer emotionally abused. My brother and I are now safe and happy. We live in peace, with a lot of love from our mom. Sometimes, I’m grateful for what happened, because it taught me a lot. Although the pain was unnecessary, it has taught me something. That everyone, no matter who, has worth. Everyone is important, and everyone deserves love. It’s taught me that parents are not always those who are biological, but can be those who are deep within our hearts. A parent does not have to be blood related in order to be a parent. Love has no limits. It also taught me that pain is not just physical, but is skin deep. Finally, it has also taught me, the most important lesson of all --- to speak up and be heard. Its not easy when you feel like no one is listening, its not easy when your self worth feels lower then you thought possible, but if you believe and keep on talking, keep on explaining you will be heard. I think this lesson can be applied to anything in life, from the school yard bully, to problems deeper and more emotional (like mine). My advice to girls is to speak up, even if you have to repeat something one hundred times before being heard, trust me, you WILL. Remember, EVERYONE is important, everyone is WORTH something, and everyone deserves love. Don’t let people belittle you. Don’t let them put you down. Remember you are all strong and beautiful and LOVED.

Proud of: I think I am overall proud to be here today, smiling and happy. As I mentioned before, my childhood was rough, but I have made it through and that is something I am very proud of. I don’t take a lot of time out of the day to think about what I have achieved, what I have done. I always try to push myself harder, forgetting what I did accomplish. But, I recently won two awards with my school for the Sears Drama Festival. I was really proud of that because we had all worked really hard on the play! I also was able to attend the final round performances for the Sears Drama Competition, and got to open up the show with my friend. That was a huge honor to me, that our school had been chosen to open it up, and that the school had chosen me to do it!  I’m mostly proud of anytime I try something new, no matter how scary or nerve-wracking it may be. I’m proud to say I like trying new things, speaking my mind and well, being proud of whom I am – no matter what.

So Julia: Talking loudly, being klutzy (falling, tripping, etc), Hello Kitty, anything purple, the brand name PINK, acting, dancing, goofing around, reading all the time, British accents, key chains (I have over 5 different key chains pinned on my school kilt!), laughing at everything and anything, Converse, over-sized bows, Harry Potter, wearing contacts, blushing (I ALWAYS do it), SpongeBob, L.A. California, wish bracelets and cute “kiddy” socks are sooo ME!

Cool fact about Julia: I was born left-handed, but when I was young my family always switched the pencil to my right hand. My mom wanted to teach me how to properly write, and because she was right handed she could only do it with her right. I did eventually learn how to write with my right hand, but I still do things with my left. I play golf, hockey and baseball as a lefty, and I am more flexible and have more strength on the left side of my body.

Future: In my future, I hope to finish high school and attended university both in Toronto and in NYC. I hope to get a degree in acting and philosophy and begin immediately working on either a television show or movie. I hope to be able to travel a lot of the world and experience many different lifestyles and cultures. Eventually I would like to settle down in a house by the beach in California and adopt children from difficult countries. Perhaps, I may even write a novel! Who knows, for me the sky is the limit! I don’t ever want to stop dreaming about my future!

Pet Peeves: When people ask a question, you answer them and then they tell you, you’re wrong. I just want to say “If you knew the answer, why did you ask me in the first place?!” I hate when people crack their knuckles, and especially when people touch my hair.

Wow this is the best article I have ever read. If I didn't know better I would not say that this was written by a 15 year old person. After reading this you have taught me so much on how to deal with our daily complications of our lifestyles. I am so very proud of you Julia you have inspired me and no doubt will continue to do so in your future endeavors.
