Be QUEEN of Your Domain, at school.
ORGANIZATION, November 2007, by Jenifer Merifield
BE QUEEN OF YOUR DOMAIN
by being organized at school
That ‘domain’ could be your locker, your desk, even your school bag.
Why a Queen? Because queens are in control. They know where things are, and their things are in good shape and treated well. Now, I’m not talking about control like ‘control-freak’, as in telling everyone what to do. I’m talking about self-control, you know... the opposite of being frazzled, confused or flustered.
It’s a couple months into the new school year now. You’ve got all the fancy new back to school gadgets and supplies. Now answer the following questions to see if you are “Queen of Your Domain”...
Do you know where everything is?
In other words, do you have to search for more than half a minute to locate the page or item you need from your locker, desk or school bag?
From day to day, can you locate things in relatively the same place each time? Say for instance you are looking for your math duotang... is it always on the top shelf of your locker? Or some days do you find it at the bottom of your knapsack, or hidden in your art folder, or is it forgotten at home?
Are your things in great condition and treated well? Meaning, do your text and note books not have bent covers or creased pages? Is your knapsack free of big stains and dirt? Is your locker or desk tidy with no unidentified objects that may at one time have been your lunch?
If you answered NO to any of those questions, you may not quite be Queen of Your Domain... yet! The good news is, you can be, and very easily.
3 Steps to Royalty
1. Find a Place
The best way to be organized is to have a place for everything. The SAME place all the time.
If you have a locker, add some extra shelves. Then, arrange your things in a way that makes the most sense. Shoes and equipment on the bottom, top shelves for books and binders. Even when you’re in the most massive rush ever, don’t just throw your stuff into the gap of space and run! It only takes a few seconds to put things where they belong.
2. Organize Your Places
Okay, so books on the top shelf, but let’s take that one step further. Do each of your subjects have their own binder or notebook? Try colour coordinating them so you know at a glance which subject it is without having to pull them all off the shelf and flip through to figure it out. You can even go so far as to group your subjects into morning and afternoon classes. Oh, and whenever you have a loose sheet, put it in with the right subject right away.
3. Be Nice To the Stuff in Your Place
Grab the subjects you’ll need before lunch and put them into a larger (lightweight) zipped binder for easy carrying. Then swap them with your after-lunch subjects later in the day. This will stop your duotangs and pages from bending and creasing or getting lost. Plus it’ll be a lot easier to carry everything from class to class.
Try this for a week... every time you put something away, put it exactly where it belongs, even if you’re in a wicked hurry. Do it at home too. And even try timing it... you’ll be shocked at how little time it takes. Not to mention how much time it saves you later!
