Manage Your Time
to include YOU!
Do you have trouble keeping up with all your commitments – school, work, extracurricular activities and volunteer time? And hey…what about time for YOU?
You can’t manage time. There are 24 hours in a day, and that will never change. You can however manage how you spend your time and make the most out of the time you have. Life can be very busy and learning how to prioritize what you need to do and what you want to do will make things easier.
Get a planner or calendar, and use it! Block in your school time and if you work, your work schedule as well. If you are signed up for extracurricular activities, mark them down too. By having your schedule written down, you will see how to plan your free time and know what’s coming up.
Make sure that there is time for yourself blocked in everyday. Even if it’s for just 15 minutes. You need to have time to yourself to dream, feel good, relax and pamper yourself. YOU are the most important part of your day.
Plan ahead. Projects, reports, exams…. schedule in time to work on and study for them. Give yourself a due date that is a few days before the project is actually due, and you’ll save yourself that last minute rush to get things done. Remember, most people don’t plan to fail…they fail to plan.
Learn to say NO! You cannot do everything and be everything to everyone. Choose what is important to you and your goals and say no to the time wasters and activities that aren’t important to you. If you’re on the swim team and you really don’t enjoy it or dread going…perhaps think about dropping it to allow more time for what you are truly passionate about.
Create a GOAL list each week. Write down all the tasks that you need to do and prioritize them by how important they are, when you need them done by and block time to work on them. Be realistic when setting your goals and how long it will take to complete the task.
JUST DO IT! Nike has the right idea. Procrastination happens to everyone, but usually once you jump in and start doing something, you’ll find out it’s not as bad as you’d anticipated. You’ll have great satisfaction when you can cross it off your list and know that you’ve made a step forward. Celebrate when a big task is complete. Positive reinforcement goes a long way!
Be true to yourself and do things that give you joy. Plan your time and you’ll find you have more than you think!
