BFF Today…
Dissed Tomorrow!
Like, what’s up with that!?
So like OMG! Some of you readers have like written in and are totally like MAD at who was ‘supposedly’ your BFF! Geez! (...lol)
Been there...
When I was in grade eight, I remember my Mom blurting out “TWELVE!” really loud one time during a conversation with her. In my head I’m thinking ‘she’s lost it completely’, but I found out that’s how many times I said the word LIKE in one MASSIVE GIANORMOUS sentence. And of course, I was talking really fast about how one of my best friends recently did me wrong!
No surprise with all the ‘likes’. Have you ever noticed that when you or your friends talk about something you’re passionate about... like gossip... that you talk faster and say "LIKE" even more? Check it out at school tomorrow, it’s hilarious when you see it in action.
Regardless of the fact that we talk faster and throw in a few extra ‘likes’ here and there, we’re dealing with serious issues here! I mean SERIOUSLY, what is more intense, more personal, more heart wrenching and more important than our GIRLFRIENDS (A.K.A. BFFs)?!
As you have been growing up, they’ve been by your side through it all... first day of school, awful hair cuts, sleep overs, first crushes, going to the mall without your parents for the first time, hour long phone calls, camp, puberty, and all those secrets you would tell no one else. They’re like sisters. Sometimes they are our sisters. So what happens when one day one of you could do something so HORRENDOUS that you simply can’t be friends anymore???
The time between 6th and 9th grade seems to be the hardest between BFFs... according to your emails and from what I remember. And it’s not that anyone WANTS to hurt anyone else, but things change. Notice key word here: CHANGE.
So maybe change stinks sometimes because it happens when we don’t want it to (like moving to a new school, or getting a nasty zit on picture day), but it’s inevitable. Stuff changes. And of course sometimes it’s good, like a cool new kid starting in your class (maybe a CUTE one!), or you’ve finally proven to your parents that you’re old enough and responsible enough to go to the movies with your friends... ALONE!
We all deal with change differently, and different changes happen to us at different times. Some people have stuff going on at home that’s not so cool, and they feel like they can’t talk about it. So they get afraid and their fear turns into anger or bossiness because they don’t know how else to deal with their pent up challenges.
Bottom line is: as you grow up, you’ll change too and so will your friends. You may even grow out of each other! That’s totally cool and there is nothing to feel guilty about if you sense that with some of your buds. Just be nice about it if you’re not feeling like you see eye to eye any more. And if you’re the one being dissed, well, as frustrating as it is and as unfair as it can be (been dissed, I know how much that stinks!) try to behave ONLY how you would want someone to behave to you. Stand up for yourself, but remember to S L O W down and think before you say something you can’t take back (have done that lots too, ugh, ALWAYS wished I could take it back).
You know, how we treat our girlfriends can be a good indication of how we may act in a serious relationship, or at our jobs, or towards our own children one day.
You have to admit though, our true BFFs are like soul mates... you could be apart for a year and within 10 minutes feel like you’re all caught up again!
