Favourites: I love traveling, sunshine, pasta, friends, church, exercising, summer camp, the colour green, speaking Swahili, the movie Hotel Rwanda, the band Switchfoot, stargazing in the summer.

Hobbies: Rowing is my favourite sport; I’m on the Crusader’s rowing team at school. I love teaching swimming lessons, taking pictures, reading, hanging with my friends, movies, bowling, and the gym.

School & Stuff: My favourite subjects are Chemistry and Math. I like wearing a uniform at school so I don’t have to think about what to wear in the morning! I have been a camp counselor, a babysitter, and a tutor.

Personality: I think I’m a happy, easy-going person. My friends would say I’m easy to get along with, easy to talk to, and a good listener.

Life Challenge: After being in Africa and seeing how huge the need is, it was challenging to know how and where to begin to help. I know even the things that seem little are important, so I help to raise money for a foundation that enables kids go to school. As a teen, I also find that balancing the different aspects of life: school, friends, family, church, and work, is a challenge. For me, school was always a big focus because education is so important. Sometimes it was at the cost of social time, but it helped me learn about moderation. I know I need friends and family time, too. Balance is good!

Proud of: I’m proud that I’ve been to 3 continents (North America, Europe, and Africa). Also, that I have maintained good grades even through the temptation to slack off or give up.

So Emily: Laughing, helping others in Africa and at school, always twirling my pen, being organized, being a morning person, not wearing makeup, being a Crusader, and listening to music, is so me!

Cool Fact about Emily: I went to the Congo in Africa over the March Break with my friend Candace, my Mom, and her friend Mimi, who has family there! We brought medicine to three clinics, went to a women’s shelter and to an orphanage. I loved how excited the kids got when we brought soccer balls and played with them. We also gave school Principals money so the kids could finish their school year. The shirt I am wearing in my photo was custom-made by a wonderful, hard-working seamstress we met on our trip. We picked the fabric, she measured us, and in only two days she sewed 7 dresses and 2 shirts through the night by the light of an oil lantern!

Future: I aspire to travel more next year and then attend the University of Ottawa for my Bachelor of Science degree.
