Real Girl: Shevya

Age: 12 Grade: 7 Sign: Leo
Favourites: My favourite colours are red, blue and green, my favourite food is Subway sandwiches and my favourite TV shows are ‘America’s Best Dance Crew’ and ‘Hannah Montana’. I love dolphins and polar bears, listening to music and talking with my friends.
Hobbies: My hobbies are playing soccer, dancing - I do jazz, ballet, modern, hip hop and competitive, and talking with my friends.
School & Stuff: I have a lot of favourite subjects. They are science, math, history, geography, gym and music. At school I enjoy being social, trying to maintain good grades, and trying out for as many sports teams as I can. Right now I do track and field and soccer.
Personality: My friends would say I’m outgoing, crazy, sporty, athletic, lovable and fun. I would also say I’m happy a lot.
Life Challenge: I’ve had type 1 diabetes since the age of seven. Every day I test my blood sugars by poking my skin with a needle and putting some blood in a little machine I have that calculates the sugar rates. Then I take insulin to balance out my blood. Insulin is something that is normally in your pancreas, but when you have diabetes it either doesn’t produce insulin or produces a low amount of it. It’s been stressful at times, like when I go to parties and everyone is eating candy all night long and I know I can only have 2 or 3. Learning to deal with it and living with it has been my challenge. I’m lucky because my family supports me and always tells me I’m doing a great job and keep it up. My type of diabetes never goes away. My message to girls who find out they have it too: stay strong even though it can get stressful.
Proud of: Being myself and of being on the National Ballet stage performing in the Nut Cracker in front of a huge audience.
Pet Peeves: When people chew with their mouth open.
So Shevya: Soccer, dance, listening to music, being crazy, talking a lot, playing ‘dance dance revolution’, taking care of my diabetes and wearing lots of lip gloss is so me!
Cool Fact about Shevya: I love playing the alto saxophone!
Future: I want to be a physiotherapist or full time dancer some day.
