Sweating and smelly, what's a girl to do?
ASK LORI and LIANE, September 2008, by Lori Clemente
Sweating and Smelly!
What can a girl do?
Dear Lori,
This is so embarassing. I have an issue with 'B.O.'. I wear deoderant but within a couple of hours I'm sweaty and smelly. It's getting bad, what can I do????
~ Signed Smelly in Vermont
Dear SIV,
Thank you for asking a question that I know affects a lot of girls who are just too embarrassed to ask! I have seen the effects on self esteem both on my friends and patients that this condition can have. It’s too bad because there is so much out there that can help!
You mention that you wear deodorant... ‘deodorant’ is simply a fragrance intended to mask odour and wetness. You may want to try an ‘antiperspirant’ instead. Antiperspirants actually stop sweating with the certain chemicals that they contain and come in many fragrances or scent-free.
If you use this type of product and still find you are “sweating and smelly” you may have something called ‘hyperhidrosis’, a fairly common condition resulting in excess sweating of the armpits, hands, feet, face, head or entire body. This can be treated with special antiperspirants that are bought at a pharmacy. They contain a higher amount of active ingredient than what you would normally find in an antiperspirant. Speak with a pharmacist if you wish to explore this option. If none of those options work speak to your Physician or Nurse Practitioner. There are various medical and naturopathic options that can help. Do a search on line to find the solution that is best for you! Remember: take care of what you put into your body... the better you take care of yourself, the healthier you will be.
Be strong!
~ Lori
