Spring Cleaning
...switching from school to
summer holiday mode!

spring cleaningSchool’s out for summer!
Dump your backpack it’s summertime! Time to enjoy the nice weather, hang out with friends and enjoy NOT doing homework. Good idea? Well, not completely. This may be the last thing you want to hear, but now is the perfect time to clean up from the school year. It’s a new season, a new start... clean out the old and make room for the new! Imagine the end result: a fresh look to your room and less clutter. Here are a few ways to get ready to welcome the best time of the school year!

1. Start a Collection

Gather all your papers, binders, notebooks and school projects. Whether they’re at the bottom of your backpack, under your bed or shoved in a desk drawer, bring them all out! Decide what you need to keep, and recycle or throw out the rest. You’re never too young to start filing, so pick up a portable file box and sort your papers and important documents. Group them by grade, subject, or however it works for you. When September comes around, you’ll be able to access what you need quickly and easily.

2. Sort Stuff Out
Go through your make up, hair products, jewelry, and other toiletries and see what you could do without. Throw out any cosmetics that smell ‘off’ or are sticky and practically empty. Put similar items together in little baskets or bins to make clean up a breeze. Try not to clutter the tops of your dresser or desk with too much, it will just make your room feel messier.

3. Closet and dresser time!

Pull out your winter clothes and get rid of stuff... any clothes that you’ve out-grown, things you haven’t worn in a year, stuff you have that your Great Aunt bought that you hate… DONATE IT! This is called purging and is the only way to make space in your closet. Do the same with your summer clothes. Only keep what you really think you’ll wear. If you buy something new, get rid of something old. This is the one in / one out rule. When you put the keepers all away, keep like with like. All your shirts together, pants together, etc.

4. Clear out under your bed!
Yes, I know… you haven’t seen under there in months… dive in, it’s time!  Pull it all out and see what you really need, and what really belongs there. Instead you could have pull out storage bins under there that are great for packing away seasonal clothes, or storing things you don’t use as often.

5. The big wipe down!
Get a cloth and wash down your desk, dresser and baseboards, you can even do the windows. Pull out the furniture to vacuum and dust behind everything. Trust me, you’ll love seeing the size of the winter dust bunnies you’ve collected! Change your bedding if you have a lighter comforter or sheets, and pack away the heavy winter covers.

6. Keep it up!

Just because it’s summer doesn’t mean you should turn into a bum. Take five to ten minutes at the end of each day to maintain all the work you have done. You’ll be so pleased with yourself. Have a great summer!
