Starting High School!
TEEN STUFF, August 2008, By Brittney and Jessica
Starting
High School!
Brittney: Many teens our age starting high school have mixed feelings about it; some are terrified or nervous and some are excited and looking forward to it.
Jessica: As our first day of grade nine approaches, we’ ve been assuming that everyone is nervous to some extent on their first day, so we decided to interview some people who have already gone through it to tell us about their high school experiences.
Brittney: Personally, I’m a little nervous, but also excited. Many people say that high school is the best years of your life; you get to do so many new things that weren’t offered in elementary school, you get to meet new people, and have more freedom. I’m nervous because it seems a bit intimidating... the whole new school thing, all the people; everything is new.
Jessica: I feel the same way, nervous and excited. You get to meet new people, have more opportunities, more fun, and more freedom (with teachers). I’m a little nervous that I might get lost, there are harder classes, more social and educational challenges, and sometimes it’s hard to fit in and feel accepted.
Julie: get involved with extra curricular things to meet new friends, and when you’re nervous, remember that you’re not the only one; there’s always other people feeling the same as you. Also, don’t be stuck with one group of friends, there are a lot of really cool people out there you could miss out on getting to know. Study hard and have serious fun!
Brianna: looking back, the fears I had in elementary school didn’t exist in high school; like being bullied. Make the most of the social opportunities, like teams, clubs, dances etc. It helps to know people, if you don’t know anyone, you might have to make the first move and introduce yourself to people.
Nikki: One thing that I learned from high school is that it’s never how you expect it to be.
So just live in the moment and make the best of it. Don’t spend your time worrying. You only get to do grade nine once, so stay confident and always remember to be yourself!
J + B: So we ’re thinking we can conclude that high school won’t be as scary as we may have thought. Maybe it’s no big deal, and it’s nothing to worry about because everyone else is feeling the same way. The first week everyone will be getting to know each other, so we should just be ourselves, stay confident, be positive and avoid the gossip and drama. High school will be some of the best years of our lives. We plan on making the best of it, what about you?
